Honfleur, one of the cradles of Impressionism…
Follow in the footsteps of the artists who loved and represented Honfleur and Normandy: Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet, Camille Corot, Gustave Courbet, Johan Barthold Jonkind and many others…

Created in 1868 by Alexandre Dubourg and Eugène Boudin, children of Honfleur, it has kept the spirit of its founders by presenting works by artists who, in the XNUMXth century, drew their inspiration from the region, from the Romantics to the Impressionists and the Fawns.

The museum presents an important collection of pre-impressionist and contemporary paintings by Norman painters who stayed in Honfleur: Courbet, Boudin, Dubourg, Jongkind, Monet, Dufy, Friesz, Gernez, Hamburg, Herbo…

History of the Museum

Le April 11th, the municipal museum was created by deliberation of the city council and by the will of an artist, born in Honfleur, Louis-Alexandre Dubourg(opposite). The municipal council emphasizes that this creation is “inspired by the love of art, the spirit of progress and a selfless dedication to public affairs”, thus paying tribute to the founder.
Since 1960, the museum has carried the name of Eugène Boudin, in memory of the one who in 1868 supported the first steps of the institution and endowed it in 1899 from a prestigious legacy. Attached to his hometown and friend of Alexandre Dubourg, Eugène Boudin provided his moral support during the installation of the museum, intended to give the people of Honfleur, a taste for Fine Arts.

Visiting rooms

The museum visit is structured around seven themes. It can be free or audio-guided.

The Désiré Louveau room, offering a rich ethnographic collection of costumes, accessories, lace, furniture, dolls and headdresses from Upper and Lower Normandy.

The room dedicated to Driès, Gernez, Herbo, Saint-Delis and Bigot, five contemporary artists who lived and created most of their work in Honfleur.

The Katia Granoff room, dedicated to XNUMXth century artists who lived or worked in Honfleur and Normandy: Vallotton, Marais, Dufy, Marquet, Cappiello and the painters of the Rouen school.

The chapel, place of temporary exhibitions at the rate of two each year. In the absence of temporary exhibitions, the chapel allows the presentation, on a rotating basis, of the museum's works in reserve.

Eugène Boudin and the painters of the XNUMXth century. In one room, the paintings on display, evolving from the dark romanticism of Isabey to the luminous clarity of Monet, evoke the atmosphere of meetings at the Saint-Siméon Inn.
The works of Eugène Boudin are surrounded by those of friendly painters: Cals, Monet, Mozin, Pécurus, Dubourg, Courbet, Jongkind. At the back of this room, two spaces present the works of Eugène Boudin. In one the pastels are grouped together: skies, views of Honfleur, scenes at the Saint-Siméon inn. In the other, oil paintings are presented: beaches, portraits, landscapes and seascapes. The museum preserves 92 works by Eugène Boudin (paintings and drawings).

The Hamburg-Rachet donation restores the spirit of a family of three generations of amateurs and artists. There are drawings by Boudin, paintings by Dubourg, Cals, Saint-Delis, Gen Paul and numerous works by André Hamburg.

The drawings cabinet, which offers the possibility of admiring around a hundred works on paper classified by theme.

In the Sainte-Catherine bell tower, annex of the museum (closed from 01/11 to 15/04) religious works are exhibited: sculptures, souvenirs from the Charities and the Notre-Dame de Grâce chapel.
