Welcome to the Museum of Ethnography and Popular Art, the first provincial ethnography museum with the Arlaten Museum in Arles, founded in 1896 by the Société du Vieux-Honfleur.

Installed in a 9th century half-timbered house which housed the Viscounty of Roncheville prison, the museum offers a free tour through XNUMX rooms furnished according to their purpose: Mercier boutique, cooper workshop, headdress room and costumes, weaver's room, memory room, burgher's room, girl's room, printer's room and sailor's dining room.
Norman furniture, costumes and headdresses from Normandy, earthenware from Pré-d'Auge, various objects, make up the collection gathered for more than a century by the members of the Société du Vieux-Honfleur.

The Navy Museum

The Maritime Museum is located in Honfleur in the former Saint-Etienne church, on the edge of the Vieux Bassin.
Built in the 1802th century, the Saint-Etienne church is the oldest in the city. Devoted to worship until the Revolution, it then served as a store, theater and trade exchange before housing the sale of large herring from 1809 to XNUMX.
Its ruined bell tower was demolished in 1808.
After 1809, it served as a real Customs warehouse until 1897 when it was sold to the Société du Vieux Honfleur which restored it, rebuilt the bell tower, erected a gallery, had stained glass windows made and exhibited part of its collections there. from 1899.

It was in 1976 that the historical and maritime collections were transferred from the ethnography manor to the Saint-Etienne church.
The models, engravings, and objects exhibited are the result of numerous donations and bequests.
All bear witness to the activities of seafarers and Honfleur society in the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries: fishing, shipbuilding, large-scale commerce, popular crafts linked to the sea, etc.

The history and topography of the port are illustrated by an important collection of plans, engravings, paintings and watercolors from the XNUMXth and XNUMXth centuries.

In the heart, you can admire a very beautiful model of the “Saint Bernadette”, witness to Honfleur fishing at the beginning of the century. In the nave, a stretcher on which was presented the blessed bread offered in this church by the cod captains on their return from Newfoundland.
